Review: Unthinkable (2010)

All movies need to start by assembling a cast that not only plays their parts, but can make the audience believe what they are seeing.  Unthinkable leaves no stone unturned, at that point, by starring the likes of Stephen Root (Louie), Michael Sheen (30 Rock), Carrie-Ann Moss (The Matrix), and Samuel L. Jackson (The Boondocks).  The other roles are filled by talented actors, as well, adding to the depth of this film.  Martin Donovan (Weeds) and Gil Bellows (The Shawshank Redemption) are great in their supporting roles. Also, having Superman himself Brandon Routh and Joshua Harto (The Dark Knight) as FBI agents gives a boost to any scene not riddled with tension.  The plot is simple and to the point, bad guy has bombs-we need to stop bad guy.  Getting there is far less simple.  This is a morality play that is very topical and on point.  The question posed is 'What would you do to save lives?'  We think we know the answer , but the filmmaker does a great job of giving a realistic look at torture.  This is necessary to see what some people deal with behind closed doors.  The performances are spot on and even if you do not agree with what is going on, or the outcome, the ride is very thrilling and thought-provoking.  It is one of the best films I have seen on a subject matter that has been talk about ad nauseam.  No other film, of this genre, has captured the moment so right and left me thinking about not just what happens at the end but what happened to get there.     4/5

Addendum:  This film was only released in theaters in the Netherlands, so the only real way to see it right now is through pirated means.  This is well know and even one of the producers commented on this in a thread on IMDB.  I will say I will gladly pay for the DVD when it is released and most defiantly would have not seen this or maybe even heard about it if not for pirating.  The producer of the film, at first, was very conflicted about the pirating, but his closing remarks were that he learned a lot from listening to what people had to say(even pirates).  I hope that the movie industry will learn that the internet is the biggest market out there and they have to rethink how a movie is made.  Some independent filmmakers are seeing this and using it is to the there advantage; learning more and more that just because your art is seen by someone that did not pay for it does not mean they can not appreciate it.
